    New Year's Resolutions

    2003 is almost gone and we are standing on the doorstep f the new year - 2004. Many people start with New Year's resolutions and most think that it's something everyone should do - decide on a resolution for the new year on 31st December and forget it on 1st January. And yet others think they should start a completely new life.

    If you expect my piece of advice on any of the above I am going to disappoint you. I'm not a person starting a new life on every occasion and not even a person of resolutions. I am a person of analyses and prefer improvements and better progress to new beginnings and new lives. I can tell you several words about analyses that bring me the best results.

    As every day, at the end of a year I make a thorough analysis of what I have done and haven't, how I did it, what it brought and didn't, what I need and want and what I should do. Then, I write my to-do list. The only difference from a common day is that I do this for the whole elapsed year and the whole coming year.

    This works for me all my life and I don't think I will ever change it. Except for the obvious advantages showing me clearly where I stand, there is one more: I don't break any resolutions. :-)

    To be more specific, I am going to outline five basic points I analyze in great detail:

  • Finance: all the income sources, their percentual proportion on my overall income, necessary time requirements, costs, expenditures and overhead, possible savings, necessary investment, new sources, my needs and requirements.

  • Business: my position compared to the situation a year ago, my position compared to my competition, to overall situation in my business field, the scope and range of my products and services, their rentability, conversion ratio, necessary improvements, expansion - new products and services, eliminating old, least required and low rentability products and services, time consuming items.

  • Marketing: every marketing strategy and technique used, their rentability, pluses and minuses, cost, profit, extensive research of new possibilities, new strategies, methods and techniques.

  • Innovation: this area is very sensitive - many people think that they must innovate everything they do just because it's necessary to bring something new. This is a very dangerous opinion.

    Every innovation, changes and bigger modifications must only be made after a thorough analysis of the results you get with what you already have.

    To be more clear: if your website conversion brings you an income you are satisfied with and it's still on the rise, with no decline signs, I would not risk an overall re-make of the website by implementing flash for instance.

    However, if your site doesn't perform the way you imagine, the conversion ratio is poor, I would definitely be on the lookout for a change but not necessarily for the latest trend but for one that will bring me the results I need. If I make an extensive research and analysis and find out that flash is the answer I would but never just because my competition has it. It may easily happen that it is exactly what will kill your competition.

    I know of a great software company improving their excellent software all the time, bringing newer and newer Versions and upgrades that their software is completely unusable now.

  • Clients: I make a detailed analysis of my clients, compare with the situation a year ago, analyze my services and products related to my clients' requirements, needs and wishes, their satisfaction; related to overall market demand and offer, areas of improvement, enhancement, new fields, new targets.

  • The above are the main fields described very briefly to give you an outline. However, if you want to get results showing your real situation and your business potential, your analyses must NOT be based on your feelings and thoughts but strictly on the facts for the given period.

    If you don't have all the facts for 2003 year why not start your proper logs now - 1st January 2004. I can guarantee that your business will advance and prosper much faster and more effectively as soon as you start evaluating the results you get.
