What Sells On The Internet?

For anyone contemplating starting an online business the
question of the day is what to sell online. You not only need
to know what to sell on the Internet but you need to know what
sells well.
There are many specific answers when it comes to this question
but probably the best answer is people buy products online that
they don't need to smell, touch or examine. They want products
that they are fairly familiar with or products that don't carry
an element of surprise upon receiving them. In other words, they
have a pretty good idea of what it is they are getting.
For example, Amazon.com does very well because there's no more
mystery to buying a book online than if they were in the book
store purchasing the book. You can't feel or touch a book online
but the internet might even be better because it offers reviews
and ratings that you may not get in a bookstore. Also, shipping
is generally fast and easy. This concept also holds true for
music, videos and CD's. They all sell very well online.
Travel sells well online. Using the internet is easier than
making a trip to the travel store and again, you know exactly
what you are getting. The internet also makes it easy to
comparison shop for the best ticket prices. Offering comparison
shopping is a key factor to a successful business online and the
internet has been a huge success in this area.
People often go to the internet to buy what is familiar.
Electronics are hot categories for consumers but some don't do
as well online because buyers like to feel them, turn them on
for clarity and test all the features of the product. Unless
someone has seen a particular item in person, tested it out and
knows exactly the style and model it is that they want, they're
not as likely to go shopping online and buy it over the
internet.
Items that are hard to find sell well online. If you offer a
unique product that can't be found in stores people are more
likely to purchase online. This is especially true for the more
rural areas of the country where it's harder to find certain
products. Here people will turn to the internet to find what
they need.
For all other products there is virtually very little that does
not sell online nowadays. Of course some things sell better than
others. For example, it makes sense that common products that
you can buy at the local store don't sell well online, but if
you can identify unique products and focus those products to
their target markets you may have a winner.
Anyone can experience healthy sales for any product sold online
by following some of the guidelines that make sales a success.
Ease of shopping.
You have to make it easy for the online shopper. Your site has
to be set up so that the shopping experience and checkout aren't
frustrating. If you've ever bought anything over the internet
think about what it is you liked or didn't like about the
experience. Certainly don't offer what you didn't like and make
what you did like even better.
Clear information and quality pictures or photos. Always provide
as much information about your products as possible and always
post a clear picture or photo. If the photo isn't of good
quality then your viewer won't consider you a quality site.
Get them as close to touching, feeling and smelling the product
as possible.
Fast or free delivery.
Provide shipping information to your viewers somewhere on your
site. Don't force them to place the order to find out how much
shipping is. Be upfront about the costs. If you offer free
shipping, post that as an advantage on your front page. Recent
reports show that free delivery is the third most important
factor in attracting repeat customers. The first two were
online security and price.
Always include an 'About' page.
Your about page should have your business name, address and a
phone number. What sometimes tips the scales in your favor is
the ability for people to find out who you are and where your
are. They need to feel they are dealing with someone honest and
genuine. They want to know that they can contact you if
necessary.
Provide security shopping
Use secure servers for ordering and post your security measures
plainly.
Offer competitive pricing.
Do your research and offer pricing that will appeal to your
buyers. If your price is higher than your competitors explain
why and what features or quality measures justify your prices.

Obstacles are the stepping stones of success

A man was walking in the park one day when he came upon a cocoon
with a small opening. He sat and watched the butterfly for
several hours as it struggled to force its body through the
little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It
looked like it had gotten as far as it could, so the man decided
to help the butterfly. He used his pocketknife and snipped the
remaining bit of the cocoon.
The butterfly then emerged easily, but something was strange.
The butterfly had a swollen body and shriveled wings. The man
continued to watch the butterfly because he expected at any
moment the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support
the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened. In
fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around
with a swollen body and deformed wings. It was never able to fly.
What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was
that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the
butterfly to emerge was natural. It was nature's way of forcing
fluid from its body into its wings so that it would be ready for
flight once it achieved its freedom. Sometimes struggles are
exactly what we need in our lives.
If we were allowed to go though life without any obstacles, we
would be crippled. We would not be as strong as what we could
have been. And we could never fly.
History has shown us that the most celebrated winners usually
encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They
won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.
My good friend, Lou Holtz, football coach of the University of
South Carolina, once told me, "Show me someone who has done
something worthwhile, and I'll show you someone who has overcome
adversity."
Beethoven composed his greatest works after becoming deaf.
George Washington was snowed in through a treacherous winter at
Valley Forge. Abraham Lincoln was raised in poverty. Albert
Einstein was called a slow learner, retarded and uneducable. If
Christopher Columbus had turned back, no one could have blamed
him, considering the constant adversity he endured.
As an elementary student, actor James Earl Jones (a.k.a. Darth
Vader) stuttered so badly he communicated with friends and
teachers using written notes.
Itzhak Perlman, the incomparable concert violinist, was born to
parents who survived a Nazi concentration camp and has been
paralyzed from the waist down since the age of four.
Chester Carlson, a young inventor, took his idea to 20 big
corporations in the 1940s. After seven years of rejections, he
was able to persuade Haloid, a small company in Rochester, N.Y.,
to purchase the rights to his electrostatic paper- copying
process. Haloid has since become Xerox Corporation.
Thomas Edison tried over 2,000 experiments before he was able to
get his light bulb to work. Upon being asked how he felt about
failing so many times, he replied, "I never failed once. I
invented the light bulb. It just happened to be a 2,000-step
process."
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, elected President of the United
States for four terms, had been stricken with polio at the age
of 39.
Persistence paid off for General Douglas MacArthur. After
applying for admission to West Point twice, he applied a third
time and was accepted. The rest is history.
In 1927 the head instructor of the John Murray Anderson Drama
School, instructed student Lucille Ball, to "Try any other
profession. Any other."
Buddy Holly was fired from the Decca record label in 1956 by
Paul Cohen, Nashville "Artists and Repertoire Man." Cohen called
Holly "the biggest no-talent I ever worked with."
Academy Award-winning writer, producer and director Woody Allen
failed motion picture production at New York University (NYU)
and City College of New York. He also flunked English at NYU.
Helen Keller, the famous blind author and speaker, said: "
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through
experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened,
vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved. Silver
is purified in fire and so are we. It is in the most trying
times that our real character is shaped and revealed."
Mackay's Moral: There is no education like the university of
adversity.

taking a look at the different methods used to communicate
on the web. It is important to understand the nuances and
benefits of the different forms.
Email
This is the most popular communication method. Users typically
use desktop software to receive, read and respond to messages.
Some users use web-based mail and manage messages in a web
browser like Internet Explorer. The downfall to email
communication is that anyone can send email messages to anyone
else if they have (or guess) the correct email address. This
system's Achilles heel is its simplicity and universal
popularity.
Email accounts are often burdened by spam or unsolicited email.
Despite software developers having created complex spam filters
and legislators having introduced new anti-spam legislation, the
problem persists and spam continues to burden email as a
messaging medium.

Instant Messaging
Instant messaging allows users to "chat" in real time. Users can
send text messages to anyone online and receive instant replies
if the user is also online. The "instant" fad gave way to
parental fears as children made "friends" online. With no way

and multiple security holes, instant messaging has taken a back
seat in internet communication.

Online journals and daily diaries have taken hold. Some blogs
are interactive, allowing users to respond and comment on posts.

interesting content on a daily basis can be a challenge. The
nature of a blog is to contain fresh public content. As our
lives become more complicated blogs are often abandoned, as they
require constant updating.

A forum is an online discussion group. Forums can be newsgroups,

themselves as valuable business resources - often creating

Liststervs are mailing list programs for communicating with

What's Next?
Internet communication is intrinsically tied to the hardware
options available. Wireless technology has accelerated the
development of messaging software, opening the market to a
dizzying array of devices for web access. Where we were once
tied to a keyboard and mouse, we will soon be navigating the
web with our voices from a moving automobile, or browsing via
screens in our eyewear, with tiny cameras reading our eye
movements to move the cursor and make selections. Our interactive
conversations will include more and more participants at once.
Evaluating the many options and choosing what works best for you
is the first step to effectively communicating on the web.
