There is no excellence anywhere without labor. We would
think a man foolish indeed who would say, "l am willing
that my business should prosper, or that my farm should
yield plentifully, but I'll not stir a peg." But he is no
more foolish than the man who says, "I am willing that God
should bless me abundantly, but I shall not do anything
toward that end myself." We must consistently rely upon the
help of the Lord, but we will not make any progress or meet
with any success unless we put forth an earnest effort.

Today's Feature Article
The Best Advertisement For Your Business
by Mark Daoust
It is no secret among internet marketers that writing
articles is a great way to market your website. With all
the article distribution services and all the websites
looking for free, unique content, writing a quality article
can bring you more links to your website in one day than an
entire month of working out link exchanges and submitting
to directories. The benefits of writing articles have been
written about time and time again. Yet in order to enjoy
the benefits of article writing, your article must first be
accepted by the publishers who receive your submissions.
This article will focus on a few key points to help
increase your chances of getting your article accepted by
the Internet’s top publishers.
Proofread Your Own Writing
Proofreading is very time consuming. If you want your
article to be widely accepted, it is your job to make the
publisher’s job easier. The first step in making the
publisher’s job easier is to check, double check, and
triple check your spelling and grammar. If you have someone
that can review your article, have them read it over. Tell
this person to look for grammatical errors, spelling
mistakes, and poorly worded sentences. They will be able to
point out mistakes that you may never have seen. When you
write an article there is a tendency of getting overly
familiar with the content and thus you could miss a glaring
mistake in your writing. Consider the following exercise by
reading aloud what is written:
London
in the
the
spring
What did you read? If you identified that the word ‘the’ is
written twice, than you can consider yourself one of only 5%
of people who get this exercise correct. 95% of people who
read this exercise only see “London in the spring X X X”. (
If you still do not see it, read it aloud again, but this
time point to each word as you read it.)
The point of this exercise is to show you just how easy it
is to miss obvious mistakes. Add in the element of
familiarity with the writing and you are likely to miss
even more mistakes. By asking someone else to read over
your work, you greatly reduce the chances of missing a
glaring error in your writing.
Rule to Remember: Proofread Your Own Writing, and then Proofread Again
Offer Something of Real Value
Articles are an incredible source of free traffic and free
advertising for your business. However, articles are not
supposed to be advertisements themselves. There is nothing
you can do to get a publisher to delete your article faster
than writing an article that is nothing more than a long-
winded ad copy.
If you want to get your article published, once again you
must get into the publisher’s mind. The publisher is always
looking to offer his or her readers with fresh, insightful,
and helpful information. Commentaries on industry trends,
useful strategies, tutorials, observations and theories all
make good articles. As an owner of a business, reviewing
one of your products, offering a teaser of the information
you sell, or blatantly marketing your products by including
your hyperlink throughout the article makes for a horrible
article that will likely not be published.
Think back to the time when you first started your online
venture (this may not be very long ago) and remember how
thirsty you were for good, quality information. When
writing your article, remember how valuable this
information was to you when you found it. Every author has
the right to a resource box which serves as your
advertisement; if you prove to the reader that you are an
expert in your field and give them information that only
you can provide, this will serve as a stronger
advertisement than if you spend 2,000 words on a long-
winded, self-promotional article.
Finally, when writing your resource box, it is best to be
as concise as possible. Resource boxes that appear to be
about as long as the article themselves show that the
author has no concern about the content of his or her
article. Limit the number of links you put into your
resource box to no more than three links and keep the
resource box to no more than four or five lines.
Rule to Remember: Write a Good Article, not a Good Advertisement
Be Clear and Concise
Many people fall into the trap of thinking they have to
develop an eloquent, graceful writing style in order to be
published. What these people seem to forget is that an
article is written with one main point: to deliver
information. Be concise, be clear, and be direct. When
writing your article, you should actually aim to be
slightly boring with your writing style. What is slightly
boring to you is probably very clear and direct to the
reader.
It is important to note that most online publishers have
much more to deal with than the writing styles of the
authors who submit articles to them. Publishers are more
concerned with grammar, spelling, and content than they are
with how eloquently a writer can make his or her point. One
thing that a publisher will take notice of, however, is a
writer who has a confusing and difficult to follow writing
style.
Your article should encourage readers to read through the
entire article. If a reader gets a few lines into the
article, or even a few paragraphs, and finds themselves
confused, you can be sure that they will never get to your
resource box and thus never visit your website. To keep a
reader interested in your article, give them quality
information and give it to them directly and clearly. A
reader will only continue to read an article if they
believe there is a good chance that they will gain
something further by finishing the article. Although it may
be counter-intuitive, boring writing does just that.
Rule to Remember: Being Boring is Better than Being Confusing
Writing good articles is not difficult. When writing your
article, think first about what publishers are looking for
in an article. Focus on your grammar, spelling, clarity,
conciseness, and content. Remember that your article should
actually help people beyond just selling your product or
service. Offer valuable information to your readers and
they will pay you back ten-fold. Offer valuable information
to a publisher’s readers and they will be certain to
publish your article and provide you with the best free
advertisement for your business.

The Secret To Success Is Preparation
Rene Godefroy
Most of us have, deep at the center of our hearts, some
things we would like to accomplish. But few of us dare to
start on the journey. We sit around blaming our
circumstances on others and making excuses for our
shortsightedness, then we go to our graves with unfulfilled
dreams. Underneath it all, the real reason we don’t get the
promotion, succeed in the business, or raise a happy, self-
confident family is that we fail to prepare. We leave it to
chance, hoping somehow things will turn out all right. We
float on the ocean of life until we run aground and wreck
ourselves.
No Excuses: It’s Up To You!
In 1983, I left Haiti with a Haitian Theater company to
perform in Montreal, Canada. After a few appearances, I
escaped from the troupe. Because the immigration department
in Canada had no pity on immigrants, I faced the threat of
going back to Haiti, and, believe me, that was not an
option for me. Instead I paid a truck driver to smuggle me
into the United States.
I remember how I had to wedge myself underneath the tractor-
trailer, between the rear tires, in a push-up position. I
was covered with dust, smoke and ashes. I had cramps in my
legs, and I was shaking. I wanted to give up. But when I
remembered my family and my friends back in Haiti who were
counting on me for help, I had to hold on.
I finally made it to what I call the Promised Land —
America. The truck driver literally dumped me in Brooklyn,
New York. I was excited on one hand and confused on the
other. It was as if I were swimming in a sea of change, and
I had just two choices: Swim, or die. My only possessions
consisted of one pair of pants, two shirts, and five
dollars. In addition to that, I was unable to speak English.
The only thing I knew for sure was that life was never
going to be the same again!
I share my story with you to impress one thing upon you: No
matter where you start in life, you can become a leader the
moment you realize that if it’s going to be, it’s up to you.
Five Ways to Prepare Yourself for Success
1) Become an Avid Reader
"Good leaders are good readers" — Jim Rohn
Abraham Lincoln once said that if he were given eight hours
to chop down a tree, he would spend six hours sharpening
his ax and two hours chopping down the tree. That is one of
the true characteristics of a leader. We all should take
time to sharpen our axes — by reading! Believe it or not,
the average American reads just one book a year. What that
means to you and me is that if we only read one book a
month in our field, we will be twelve years ahead of the
average person!
The late Earl Nightingale, in his book, The Strangest
Secret, said that if we read for two hours every day on any
subject, in five years, we would become national experts on
that particular subject. And in ten years, we would have
the equivalent of a Ph.D! To me, reading quality books is
the ultimate joy in life. It rekindles my hope and takes me
to new heights. It rejuvenates me and gives me a boost. We
can no longer make excuses about not having time to read.
Today we can even buy most books on tape, thereby turning
our cars into a university on wheels while commuting to and
from work! On the road to success, we must gather a lot of
information through quality reading.
2) Network with Successful People
In America, there is an association for continuing
education in every line of business. If we want to meet the
movers and shakers directly, we have to become joiners.
It’s amazing how accessible the "big dogs" are when we
attend the networking events. It’s like being a small fish
in a big pond. It allows us to bypass the gatekeepers — the
assistants — and go straight to the decision-makers.
The best way to find out which associations you can join is
to go to the library and ask for the Encyclopedia of
Associations. Another great way to network is to join the
local Chamber of Commerce. First, however, you must learn
how to network and build strong referral systems. There are
many books on the subject. One of them is by Harvey Mackay:
Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty.
3) Find a Mentor
Every great athlete, celebrity, and business executive can
point to a mentor — a coach. They each had people who
helped them to get where they are. One of the best methods
of preparation is to find a mentor — a person who has been
there, done that, and has gotten the T-shirt — to guide you
along the way.
Whether you want to move up in your company or establish a
solid business of your own, a mentor can make a significant
difference. And you don’t necessarily have to have just one
mentor; you can have many. This may sound simple, but it is
powerful! No matter what line of business you are in, you
need a coach — someone you talk with about your failures
and successes, someone who can advise you. How do you find
a mentor? Just ASK!
People normally love to talk about their successes and how
they accomplished them. They are eager to help us if we
courteously ask them. For many years I failed to put into
practice the old advice in the Bible: "Ask and ye shall
receive." Don’t let that happen to you — ASK!
4) Attend Continuing Education Classes
Our minds are like leaky buckets; what we know is
constantly dripping out. I read a story about a man who was
working for a company for about twenty years. It seems like
they always passed over him for promotions. Ironically, he
had trained new hires who would eventually become his boss!
One day he confronted the president of the company about
the situation. He told his boss that he was being treated
unfairly, especially since he had had twenty years of
experience with the company. The president sat the man down
and told him, "No! You only have one year of experience
repeated for twenty years."
How long have you been in your line of business? Are you
getting new knowledge, or are you applying old knowledge?
If we are going to thrive and survive in these turbulent
times, we must expand our minds. And one of the best ways
of expanding is to attend adult learning classes at the
local colleges, universities, and technical schools. They
are very affordable, and they also have flexible schedules.
There are no excuses: IT’S UP TO YOU!
5) Find Time for a Quiet Reflection
The great philosophers, thinkers, scientists, and business
gurus always find quiet time to be alone — to ponder,
recharge, and flood their minds with images of their future
goals. We should never be so busy chasing a dream that we
are no longer able to visualize it in our minds. There are
times when the burdens are heavy, but this is when we need
to enter our inner world and examine our lives. Socrates
once said to his students, "An unexamined life is not worth
living." Quiet reflection is a time to get to know the
invisible power that sustains our lives. Starting today,
take a few moments every day to reflect.
A Final Note
I would love to meet you personally to find out what you
are doing to prepare yourself for success. The old adage
says that the road to success is always under construction.
It is the same for our self-improvement. If you are not
constantly adding new tools to your toolbox, you will
always be where you are today. I urge you to read, find a
mentor, network with other leaders, and find time for a
quiet reflection.
I wish you incredible success!

Prepare Well Before Buying Your Digital Camera
Todd Nelson
Choosing the right digital camera for general use can be
more challenging than actually taking a good picture. Like
all things technical, digital cameras come in a vast array
of styles, sizes and abilities.
Making the right choice does not require intensive
research. However, you do need to take stock of your
budget, skill level and planned use of your photographs.
Today's cameras suit all skill levels and needs. There are
plenty of cameras made to point and shoot, if
technicalities are not your strong suit. And you'll get
some nice looking snapshots with them.
But to allow scope for your creativity, you might also
consider a camera with the option for manual control of
aperture, shutter speed, flash and other features.
Of course, with the hundreds of digital cameras that are on
the shelves, you don't have to make a commitment -- many
cameras have both automatic and manual settings. It all
depends on what you want to spend.
It is important to be clear on what you're willing to spend
before heading to the store or checking the online
possibilities. You will narrow down the options to save
yourself time and prevent regrets later.
Besides assessing your budget and skill level, also decide
how the camera will be used. Will your photos be primarily
for uploading for online auction sales or to share with
friends? Or will you be printing them more often than not?
If you are looking for professionally finished prints,
brilliant color and a sharp image, you will need a camera
with high image quality. The quality of an image is
directly related to how many pixels it can capture
horizontally and vertically.
A 4 megapixel or higher camera provides the scope to create
fine quality enlargements of 11 x 14 -- and even bigger. A
3 megapixel camera will produce an excellent 8 x 10 print.
For standard sized photos, you can manage with 1-2
megapixels.
Zoom lenses can also play a key role in the appearance of
your photos. Many cameras will have zooms, but the size and
type of zoom are important to consider. The larger the zoom
(a 3x would be average and 10x large), the closer you will
be able to get to subjects like sporting events and
wildlife. But for good quality photos, be sure the camera
has a true optical zoom rather than a digital zoom, which
merely enlarges the center of the basic image.
With any technical item, quality can vary. Some digital
cameras break down more often than others, have finer
optics or better features such as LCD screens. Some have
expensive proprietary batteries. So to compare and
contrast, go to your favorite search engine and enter a
term such as 3 megapixel camera+review.
Once you know your basic needs, learn the key terminology
and have compared models in your price range, you'll be
ready to make a wise investment that will pay enjoyment
dividends for years to come.
