Every year before the new year starts people look back to summarize the past year and make plans and goals for the year coming.

Are You a Planner or a Doer?

Are you the type of person who just gets out there and makes things happen? Or are you more comfortable thinking things through before you jump? Take our quick quiz and find out which category you fall into - and how to use the information in your business.

1. Your friends want to hold a party, and ask for your help. How do you assist them?

a. I know how to make a party work already, so I would go out and buy the necessary items, tell everyone what they need to do, and then start to work getting it all set up.

b. First, I'd brainstorm some party themes and ideas. Then, after we had decided on a theme, I'd help my friends make a list of supplies needed, and ask them what they wanted me to do.

2. Do you ever procrastinate on the things you need to do each day?

a. Very rarely. I'd rather just get my to do list over with, to give me time for other things I enjoy.

b. All the time. I can't seem to get caught up on my to do list because of it.

3. What's the hardest part of setting up a business for you?

a. Fixing problems that arise - sometimes I find that I have to start over and try to think about what I did wrong in the first place.

b. Figuring out where to go next. I spend so much time thinking of new ideas, that it's hard to know how to actually make them happen.

4. How do you handle large projects?

a. I like to see a project completely through to the last detail before setting up something else.

b. I enjoy working on a lot of new projects all at once. My biggest problem is in seeing them through from start to finish.

5. When do you feel happiest?

a. When I'm completely into a new project, working on all the parts and making it actually happen.

b. When I'm thinking about how to make an existing project better, or brainstorming new ideas for the future.

Answers:
If you answered mostly a's, you're probably a doer. If you answered mostly b's, you're probably a planner. So what does that tell you about your business style?

Doers like to jump right in and take charge, and enjoy the physical nature of a project. They don't usually understand hesitation - doers are often impulsive, doing just what planning is absolutely necessary to make something happen. They often think of things in terms of right or wrong, and don't usually waiver in their decisions. Doers are terrific business managers, but because they have problems coming up with ideas, their companies may be lacking in a creative, original angle. If you belong to this group, it's a good idea to take a step back and look at your business plan a little more closely. Ask your customers or employees for suggestions that you can then carry out. You might even want to offer incentives for new ideas.

Planners are the typical "entrepreneurial spirit". They could spend all day just thinking of new ways to make things better, but have a hard time narrowing down an idea. They enjoy setting up a project more than actually completing it, and may have problems making a decision. Planners are usually very idealistic, and may have problems with procrastination. If you belong to this group, it's a good idea to create a strict schedule, or at least set up a specific time each day to complete a project. Planners usually respond well to time schedules, and work well when they need to cram for a deadline. So if you can create deadlines, even if they are just for your own benefit, it may help you complete tasks. Also consider filling your staff with people who take an idea and make it workable.

If you're looking at a potential partnership, consider merging with someone who is an opposite type. Planners and doers work well together to make a goal a reality - planners think of the ideas and plan a strategy, while doers actually complete the work needed. Even if you're not planning on partnering or hiring employees, you can still take the information and learn more about what type of person you are, as well as what steps you need to take to make your business more efficient.

Scientific Proof of the Power of Belief

You've heard the expression, "We are what we think."

But is this old saying really true in a scientific sense? Do our thoughts "really" control what we accomplish in life?

I recall a classic study from many years ago. Picture this:

A teacher comes into a primary-level classroom, and tells her students that a new scientific study proved blue-eyed children are a lot smarter than brown- or green-eyed children.

The results are both immediate and dramatic.

The blue-eyed children immediately began to outperform their brown and green-eyed classmates in all aspects of their studies.

Then two months later the teacher calls a special class-room meeting. She tells the students she'd made a serious mistake. She apologized, and said the study had actually proven that brown- and green-eyed children are the most intelligent.

Again the results are dramatic and immediate.

The blue-eyed children lost their edge and began to under perform. The brown- and green-eyed children's grades, on the other hand, immediately soared to the "superior" range!

What does this prove? Simply this:

If you "believe" you're smart, you act smart.

If you "believe" you're creative, you act creative.

If you "believe" you're a success, you act successful.

If you "believe" you're excellent at something, you act (and therefore become) excellent.

We each live up (or down) to the image we hold of our self.

An Important Insight
Earl Nightingale, a prominent success philosopher and teacher, spent a good part of his life studying the wisdom contained in the world's philosophical, religious and metaphysical writings.

Nightingale reported discovering one common belief: "We become what we think about."

It seems Nightingale's finding agrees with what the classroom-study proved: If you *think* you're bright and destined for success, guess what? You'll be smart, and you'll do smart things that will move you along toward success.

But if you *think* you're dumb and destined to fail - you'll do dumb things, and ensure you end up failing.

This Works
We really are just like those young children in the classroom. Perhaps you remember something like this: You're 7 years old and want to learn to play ball. But you haven't had any experience catching, throwing or hitting.

So -- you approach some kids playing ball and ask to join. They assign you the position of third baseman.

But by the time the inning is over, you've clearly shown your lack of skill. Then catastrophe strikes when you come up to bat and strike out! That's the end of your "baseball career."

You were dubbed a "stupid dummy," and thrown off the team.

Then suppose you tell your Dad what happened, and he says something like: I'm not surprised Son, you're really NOT cut out for sports.

The ANTs Have Invaded
Do you have some particular areas of life in which you seem to have "natural" limitations? If so -- take a look inside your mind. You'll find some of image-damaging messages from childhood.

These ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) don't just go away on their own. They sneak around in your subconscious mind twenty-four hours a day sending their messages throughout your mind.

If you even consider engaging in an activity that has ANTs attached to it, a whole army will start to march along your neural networks. Suddenly you'll decide to "just forget it" because "I'm not any good at that anyway."

Sound familiar?

How to Stamp Out ANTs
To claim more of your TRUE potential for personal excellence, you'll have to move those ant hills out of your subconscious mind. The following exercise works especially well for eliminating negative thoughts.

This exercise is intended to be performed in privacy, while facing a mirror. Look straight into your own eyes and repeat an affirmation. Get as much emotional feeling into it as possible.

If you want to overcome negative feelings about public speaking, for example, your affirmation might be: "I am an excellent speaker."

If you want to stomp out negative feelings about failure, you might say: "I am fearless."

Frequent repetition creates new and stronger neural networks. Don't be alarmed if you begin to look like a different person in the mirror. Done over time, you will begin to get glimpses of a "truer" version of yourself in the mirror.

The Perfect Gift

Every year we agonize over what presents to get for our friends and family. We all enjoy the "giving" as well as the "getting". We scour the stores for that one perfect gift, we want to hear the "oos and ahs" when they open the gift from us.

Can I give you all some suggestions?

Do you have an elderly or disabled person on your list? Do you know someone in a nursing home, or someone who is on a fixed income, food stamps or having a hard time this year?

Believe me the last thing they need is a candle, or trinket, or nic-nac.

An elderly woman may enjoy a trip to the beauty salon, or day spa, an elderly gentleman may prefer a haircut in a barber shop with a good shave. Treat them to lunch afterwards!

Gift certificates to a resturant or cafeteria is nice. See if your grocery store has gift certificates and offer to take your loved one on a shopping spree!

Think about the "needs" of the person you are buying for. Do they take the bus or a cab as transportation? Purchasing tickets for them can be a huge financial help!

The gift of "time" is always special to someone who is elderly or disabled. Sitting with someone in a nursing home or hospital and bringing them news of outside is very precious to them. Just 30 min of your time would bring joy to someone who never has a outside visitor.

Let's not forget our homeless and forgotton. The shelters are overcrowded this time of year and in desperate need of our contributions. Go to the dollar store or discount store and purchase razors, shave cream, and other personal items we take for granted but are treasures to those who are without.

And last but definitely not least our men and women in the military. Go here and do what you can.

This holiday season go to your local hospital and ask if there is someone in need, find out what you can do for them. Call a shelter and see what their needs are and how you can help. Is your church food pantry well stocked? Maybe you know of an elderly person who would enjoy having Christmas dinner at your home!

Sometimes "the perfect gift" isn't in a store and can't be purchased.
