Can You Really "Strike Gold" Online?

I guess human nature leads us to this about every 30 - 50 years.

As a history major, I studied the gold rush of 1849, the 19th century oil booms, the stock market hustles of the late 1920's, the get rich-quick mail order schemes of the 1950's and 60's and now the "Internet" gold rush of the late 1990's and early 21st century.

When people perceive someone else getting rich with little or no effort, they jump on the band wagon seeking fame and fortune.

In reality, in any "gold rush," the ones who really get rich represent the exception.

Unfortunately, people perceive those "exceptions" as the rule, rather than the special cases they actually represent.

But, if you're bound and determined that you can be one of the "chosen few" who get rich online, the following tips will save you years of frustration.

** Little Oil Wells **

Don't try to get rich online with one gold or oil "strike!"

Most people I know who do very well online operate multiple websites targeting multiple niche markets.

They sell many products and make their money by creating multiple streams of income rather than depending on a single website to stake their claim for online riches.

** Solve Problems **

People go online to solve problems.

Whether they need to improve their job interview skills or find a winter coat and hat for their Chihuahua, they want to find products or knowledge they don't currently possess.

The more pressing the problem, the easier and faster these people will buy.

The easiest way to make a fortune online involves finding the most severe problems you can and charging for the solutions.

** Sweat, Not Money **

Most people want to throw money at a problem and hope that will get them what they desire.

This fact keeps the "get-rich-quick" schemers in business.

However, the best way to make money online involves getting your hands dirty, learning a market inside and out, discovering what they want to buy and why, and then selling it to them.

Contrary to popular belief, throwing money at a problem often won't solve it.

** Don't Compete **

The fastest way to make a fortune online involves persuading other people to sell your product or service for you as an affiliate.

However, nobody sells a product or service for someone they perceive as "competition."

You must position your product or service in such a way that others will eagerly promote it for you because they see you as someone who complements what they already offer.

** Wants vs. Needs **

Circus and publicity guru, P.T. Barnum, expressed it best, "People will spend their last nickel to have fun!"

People always find a way to buy what they want, but often avoid spending on what they need.

** The Underwear Myth **

The "make money in your underwear at the kitchen table working only 1 or 2 hours a day" represents the biggest crock of !@#$% ever foisted on the public.

Anyone I know who makes a lot of money at anything, busts their buns to get their projects off the ground.

Once they get a business up and running, it might only take a couple of hours a day or week to keep it running, but they worked their fingers to the bone to get things rolling.

And the real secret to their success: they repeat the process over and over again!

A Balloon Goes Up; A Stone Falls to Earth; Why? One Force in Nature - Gravity

The science of theology and medicine are necessarily very closely allied, both having to do with the saving of men from the consequences of wrong living; and it follows that in religion and medicine we are always seeking for realities; searching the truth; seeking the ultimate, spiritual and physical facts upon which to base our theories, and from which to proceed in making our demonstrations of health and wholeness. And since our demonstrations must and will be complete or incomplete just in proportion to the completeness of our grasp of the realities, the importance of the search for truth becomes apparent; the very first thing we have to do is to penetrate through all the appearances of life, and ascertain the differences between what is really true and what is only apparently true; for there is often a vast difference between the appearance and the reality. The sun appears to rise and set, and to go around the earth; but it does not. A balloon goes up; and a stone falls to the earth; in appearance there are two forces at work, but in reality there is only one - gravity. The reality behind the going up of the balloon and the coming down of the stone is the same. And to seek for the realities behind the appearances of life; behind its goings up and comings down, its goings out and comings in, - that is science, and that is what we are going to try to do.

The first of the realities with which we will deal is Time. It is the fashion with some metaphysical writers to assert that there is no time; but the arguments advanced in support of this claim are superficial. Time is not an entity having substance, but it is an existing reality, nevertheless. Time is not an idea; a fiction by which we measure and record the motions of the heavenly bodies; time would go on just the same and at exactly the same rate if the heavenly bodies were motionless. Do not misunderstand me in my use of the word "time." Many people suppose that time began when man began, and must end when man ends as a mortal and physical being, and that the periods before and after the earth life of the human race are to be called eternities; in other words that there can be no time except so long as there is a mortal man to measure it; but this is erroneous. Days, weeks, months and years must have gone on before man came on earth, just as they do now; and if man disappeared from the earth, they would still go on. If the earth ceased to revolve around the sun, and to turn on its axis, the succession of the seasons and of day and night would cease; day would be continuous on one side of the earth, and night upon the other, but hours and minutes would go on just the same, and if the sun, moon, planets, stars and all else were to disappear and be succeeded by black, silent, formless chaos, hours and minutes would go on forever. Clocks do not make time; an hour would have the same duration if there were no clocks. In eternity there must still be time; time is duration in eternity. Eternity is endless time.

Time can never end. If you try to think of a point at which time should end, you can only think of it as a point beyond which there must be still more time. Also, then, time can never have had a beginning; for if you try to think of a point at which time began, you can only think of it as a point beyond which there must have been still more time. Do not say that endless time is unthinkable; you can very easily think endless time, if you do not try to think of the end of it. You cannot comprehend endless time, for that means to contain it in your mind, or to go around it; but you can know what it is, and you can know that it is.

Time is; and we must use it, whether we will or no. And the use we make of present time decides the use we shall be able to make of future time; just as the use we made of past time has fixed our place in present time. The use we make of today decides the use we shall be able to make of tomorrow. To be strong and wise is to be able to use time well; and to use time well is to become continually stronger and wiser. Success, growth and development are only attained by the right use of time; and we are failures today in exact proportion as we have erred in our use of time past. To know the right use of the present moment is therefore of immense importance; and to have the will to make the right use of it is more important still. If man can - and will - make the right use of every moment of time, he must certainly become a being of marvelous power and wholeness. Oh, the wasted time! The misspent time! The lost time!

Getting Your Website Traffic Into Context

Contextual traffic-providing websites are few on the ground compared to the more usual pay-per-click variety. One such is called 'Have Traffic' at:
http://www.havetraffic.com

When I came across it, I decided to test it out by making a comparison test with 2 other popular pay-per-click search engines.

First let's get a few things straight. The popular Pay-Per-Click traffic websites can be expensive for the average user. This is due to using keywords that are certainly relevant, but that bring in visitors who are only casually interested in the item being sold. Moreover, the costs are climbing all the time as those desperate to sell their products compete with one another to pay ridiculous amounts, say $3-8 for the possibility of converting a click into sale.

Yes, pay-per-click is a step ahead of blind blanket advertising, but the rising costs force busy web marketers to consider other ideas too. At least, that's my view. Especially when there are alternatives that have ditched keyword bidding in favor of targeted traffic from a network of sites.

That is how 'Have Traffic' is independent of the use of keywords - no more head-to-head bidding wars with your competitors.

I made my comparison test between 3 different Pay Per Click Traffic sources with an investment of $200 in each campaign on my latest ebook 'Cash From Your Camera'

The PPC sites were Google and Kanoodle while the other one was Have Traffic at:

So, all that said, here is what happened for me.

First, for the Google traffic, my average cost per click was 45 cents for the range of different keywords I was bidding on. I received a total of 449 visitors and 1 order. I also received 20 sign-ups to my newsletter providing a sign-up conversion rate of around 4.4% and ROI of 43%

Kanoodles's traffic was disappointing although much cheaper. I actually received 1523 visitors for my $200 investment. This works out at less than 8 cents a visitor for the same keywords. But the campaign resulted in zero sales an only 2 sign-ups to my newsletter...not good!

Have Traffic was the real surprise package.

I received 1,000 visitors for my $200 and actually received 3 sales and 46 subscribers to my newsletter. The actual return on my investment was a 135% plus I received 46 leads with which to follow-up

Only one of my three campaigns even broke even and that one only earned 135% ROI. I obviously need to optimize everything a bit better and then I could at least get a profitable return from both Google and Have Traffic. It really looks like Kanoodle is a bust no matter what I do. It's a shame. In the distant past, I could count on decent traffic from them.

I guess it's possible that the results may have been different if I had used different keywords for the campaigns

But overall, this test shows that it is still possible to find cost effective pay-per-click advertising. You just have to look harder (sometimes at unexpected sources) and optimize your ad copy quite a bit more than was necessary in the past for even solid known good sources of traffic like Google.
