Tough Money Decisions

As soon as you decide to start a business of your own, you should realize that all financial decisions are in your hands and the related consequences as well.

You must become a quality manager in the first place, if you want to succeed and make your business profitable and stable long-term.

A manager refers to a person (or persons in a large company) who is in charge for operating a business and for measuring up to the profitability and liquidity goals.

You, as the manager, need to answer important questions such as what was your company’s net income, and if you have a substantial rate of return. Does your company have enough assets, and which products bring in the most money? When making a decision, managers usually follow a systematic approach. Even though larger businesses require a more concrete analysis, the basic pattern is similar to small businesses.

* Financing a business: Financing for a company is critical, because you need money to continue your operations. Here is a useful website to find out more information about financing a business. http://www.sba.gov/financing/

* Investing in a business: As the owner of your company you must invest in your current assets so that it will make money for you in the future. It's essential to strictly differentiate between an investment and a cost.

* Producing goods or services: You are also responsible for developing and producing goods and services that your company can sell.

* Marketing: It's vital to continuously learn marketing and advertising skills so that you can distribute goods and services more efficiently.

* Managing workers: If you decide to employ people, then you must hire qualified employees, and also pay them.

* Analysing information: You must regularly collect and analyse data about your company such as how much you made in the last month, the sources, how your business is performing and organize the information in a way so that it can be used. You also release the information to important people outside your business.

Most businesses generally publish their financial report which shows how well they meet their profitability and liquidity goals. These statements display how well a company did in the past and probably most important, how well they will do in the future.

However, many people outside the business also study the financial reports. They are the investors and the creditors.

* The investors are the individuals that invest in a business and will keep a part of the ownership. They are concerned with their past success and failures, and also will like to know the potential earnings. A concrete analysis of the financial statement will help prospective investors base their decisions. Once they finish investing they must continue to study a business financial statement.

* Next, the creditors are the companies that lease money to businesses for short or long term needs. Creditors are the people that deliver money or provide services for companies in advanced before getting paid.

Their main concern is whether a business will have the money to repay the money with interest in an approximate time. Some of the things they study before they make their decisions are a company’s liquidity, cash flow, and profitability. Some examples of creditors are banks, mortgage companies, and insurance companies.

Even though I am very negative about hiring too much staff, I highly recommend that you hire a competent accountant if you're not an able professional in the field yourself.

Accounting is a systematic information system that measures, process, and communicate information, in particular financial about your business. An experienced accountant can significantly help you make better financial decisions for your business.

My greatest respect is for people who have experienced adversity and then come back. I was one of those people, in the early nineties. I went through a tough period and learned a lot about myself, and then came back bigger and better and stronger. It wasn't unlike what happened to Frank Sinatra in the early fifties. Like me, he lost focus. He took his eye off the ball and he made some bad decisions. (Also like me, it was the fairer sex that had a little something to do with his troubles, but that's another story for another time.)

There's a wonderful story in Sammy Davis Jr.'s book, Yes I Can. In this story Sammy, who is on the way up (due in no small part to Sinatra's patronage), sees Frank walking down Broadway all by himself, looking utterly dejected. At the time, Frank was on the skids, having gone from being the biggest singer ever known to a laughingstock, reduced to singing novelty songs.

It's a familiar scenario to me, because one night at 3:00 A.M., when I was more than $9 billion in debt, I was summoned to Citibank for a conference call with a bevy of international bankers to whom I owed money. It was pouring rain and I couldn't get a cab, so I had to walk to the bank, 15 blocks from Trump Tower. By the time I got there I was soaked. I felt then like I had reached my lowest point. But we worked things out, and the rest, as they say, is history. They also say it's darkest before the dawn. You know what I say: Never ever give up.

We are now in the heat of holiday shopping and NOW is the perfect opportunity to apply some last-minute holiday marketing tactics to capitalize on the buying frenzy!

Don't procrastinate because time is running out...

As an online business, you only have a few weeks left before sales will drop off and the last minute shoppers turn to traditional retail stores in order to avoid expensive last-minute shipping!

So without further ado, here are 4 tactics you can apply TODAY!

Tactic #1: Add Some Holiday Flair To Your Salecopy!

Make sure your salescopy tells your customers which of your products would make good gifts for which of their family members...

• This would make a great gift for mom!
• This would make a great gift for the entrepreneur in your family!
• This would make a great gift for video game fan!
• This would make a good gift for [insert recommendation here]!

... You get the point.

Never assume your customers "get it" because they probably don't... you need to tell them who your product(s) apply to and why they should buy it for them as a gift.

Tactic #2: "Top 10 Gift Ideas" List

If you're a business with numerous products, then one of my favorite tactics is putting a "Top 10 Gift Ideas" list on your site.

If someone is surfing the Internet for gift ideas, your list will grab their attention -- and you can then direct them toward the products that generate the highest profits for you!

And don't forget to modify the salescopy of the products you recommend to play up the "gift idea" angle! Just like with Tactic #1, you need to tell them who wants your product and why it would make a great gift.

Tactic #3: Capitalize On "Seasonal Keywords" in the Pay-Per- Click Search Engines

At this time of year "Gift"-related keywords will see a substantial increase in search volume as shoppers are looking to buy presents for their loved ones! For example:

Hobby Related Key Phrases:

• Golf gift idea
• Fishing gift idea
• Video game gift

Individual Specific Key Phrases:

• Christmas gift for Fisherman
• Christmas gift for Plumber
• Christmas gift for Student

Warning: Stay away from more general keywords and phrases like "Christmas Gift" or "Christmas Gift for Dad." They will not drive you the targeted traffic you need.

And remember, to get the highest possible conversion, the salescopy on your website needs to continue the theme of the keyword.

So if someone comes to your website after searching the keyword "Christmas Gift for Student," you need to continue that theme and create a landing page that explains why your product will make a good gift for a student.

Tactic #4: The Countdown Clock!

This one's my favorite...

Make sure you add a countdown timer to your website that's counting down to the last minute your customers can order a product from your website and still get guaranteed delivery by Christmas!

Even if you have two weeks left on your countdown clock, the psychology of a clock counting down in front of someone will increase their urgency to order NOW!

The easiest way to add a countdown clock to your website is with one of the many free javascripts available on a site like javacript.internet.com. Go to this site and search for Countdown Timer and you will be presented with numerous options.

So there they are -- four strategies you can apply to profit from the holiday buying frenzy. But remember, that countdown clock is ticking for YOU, too... so you need to take action NOW!
