Dr Martin W. Russell
A young college student came to me for help with a few
different issues, but in particular she wanted hypnosis so
she could stop procrastinating.
She was nearing the end of her pharmacy degree, and had
always gotten her academic results by ending up studying
really hard in the final days before an exam. It was really
starting to be an issue for her and she had finally sought
professional help about it.
Without saying any more, let me ask you a question? What
would your advice be for this woman. Ignore the hypnosis
issue, because I didn't end up using hypnosis for her, but
what would you recommend for her, and what would you need
to know, to help her out in a single session.
As she and I spoke I learnt more about the grades she was
getting. She was getting high marks, credits and
distinctions, and so I asked her how procrastination was a
problem for her. She described how concerned her family,
and even friends, were as they saw her being totally taken
over by study in the days leading up to exams, to the point
where her entire life disappeared into study as she went
through her cramming in the last few days before an exam.
She was getting very stressed about this behavior during
the cramming. She was also worrying about this at other
times during the university term too, and more and more
this was playing on her mind. She had tried to set up
better, more consistent study habits but with no success.
However she was otherwise healthy, happy and social, and
she was not taking drugs, going without sleep, or doing
anything else that might be damaging.
So here is where I put to her the crucial question, which
was, "What marks are the people who are telling you how bad
your procrastination is, getting in comparison to yours?",
and she immediately said, "Definitely not as good, not any
of them."
So I discussed with her the possibility that her biggest
problem was not procrastination, since her way of studying
were perhaps unusual for her friends, but not unusual for
the people I went to medical school with, and most
importantly the outcomes were what she wanted. No, the
biggest problem was the advice she was being given, and if
she followed that advice she would be likely to get the
same results as the person who was giving that advice.
Now does this mean that she couldn't study for exams in a
better way? No, not at all. However it was my opinion that
rather than jump to the conclusion that everyone else was
right, she needed to decide whether she was unhappy with
the situation. If she opted for a change then it would be
on her terms, and she could at least copy people who were
getting the results she was getting or better.
She came back a week later, much less stressed, and not
wanting any changes in this area. What have people advised
you about the suitability or otherwise of procrastination
in your life, and are you getting told what you "should" do
rather than what is specifically suitable for you? It makes
a big difference.
