Hilary Topper
Hi, this is Hilary Topper from HJMT Communications, and today we're going to focus on the big picture. How to create a strategic plan on the internet for social media. And I'm going to provide you with three tips.
But first off, I want to talk to you a little bit about a case study. There's a group-- well everybody knows Skittles. Skittles is candy, and they have done something amazing on the internet. What they've done is they've taken their website and thrown it out the window.
They've decided that they're going to take all of their social networking sites, combine them into one and their-- either their Wikipedia page, or their Facebook page, or their Twitter page will become their homepage. And each time it's a different page.
And when you click on different links, it takes you to either their Twitter page, their Facebook page, their YouTube page, their podcast page, etcetera. So they have everything in one and it's really interactive, and everybody gets an opportunity to talk about how great Skittles is.
So in terms of creating your own social media, a plan for your firm or agency, look at the opportunities out there on the web. Make sure that your organization fits into the realm of that particular site.
Also include four to five different social networking sites. A blog, a podcast, a video podcast all together to hit your target audience and to get your efforts and information out there.

Social marketing and business expert Thomas Power ponders the future of social networking and the business development opportunities it will create:
“If you have a giant network, you don't need to look for business. It just comes. And what I'm trying to figure out is how big a network can you build? How much of a network is it possible for me to build now?
“If I've got 50,000 contacts on Ecademy. I've got 25,000 on LinkedIn. I've got 10,000 followers on FriendFeed -- on Twitter. I've got 5,000 friends on Facebook. And Facebook have shut the door. You know, you can't have more than 5,000. So you have to wait for them to open up. But what happens when that number's a million in 20 years? What's it like having a million contacts? What would it be like, that? Obviously it would be impossible to manage them. So you wouldn't bother.
