Primer: The Basics of Internet Marketing
The
Basics of Building a Successful Internet Business.
Introduction
Dear
Friend,
My
name is Carl Herold. I am the President and Co-Founder of
Clickalyzer, and I wrote this course with one goal in mind. I
want you to have everything you
need in order to build a successful internet business. If you
already have a successful business, then I want to show you
how to get it to grow. If you are having trouble getting
started, or you are discouraged - don't worry :-) I have been
there myself, and I *assure* you - that you CAN succeed. You
just need to go to school a bit - and I will be your
teacher.
Lets
begin.
Believe
me, this is more than possible. I do not have another job. I
make my living entirely through the internet. This is possible
only because I understand how business on the internet works.
Once you understand the inner workings behind a successful
internet business, you have a solid foundation upon which you
can build a highly successful company.
Internet
Marketing is a science. Anyone who wishes to have a successful
online business must understand this, and work based on this
principle. Scientists work on real information, not on
guesses.
Just
having a website does not mean you have a "business"
on the internet. Just because you have a website does not mean
will get people to give you money. Anyone can have a
"business online" - but no one wants to have a
"business" that makes no money!
Also,
Just
because you have a website that makes you money, does not
mean it cannot make you *more* money if you apply certain
principles - which I will show you. And finally, just because you have not
been able to succeed so far absolutely does not mean you cannot succeed.
It took me years to learn the information I am
going to give you for free in these lessons. Seems a bit
unfair... took me years, yet you get it for free... *sigh*
LET
ME EXPOSE A MYTH:
I
often hear people say "I do not have the time or money to
build a successful online business!" Creating a
successful internet business takes very little time and very
little or no money. In fact, Clickalyzer
itself was built without any startup money, and it took very little time. If
you ask any expert in Internet Marketing, they will tell you
that time is not the issue, neither is money - the real issue
is effectiveness and your understanding of how to build a
successful business online.
Let
me say this again - I started Clickalyzer without *ONE CENT*
of startup money. How did I do it? Because I was able to learn
the principles that I am going to teach you in this course. If
you have enough time to watch half an hour of television each
day - you have more than enough time to build a successful
online business. I am not alone here - MANY successful
internet businesses started without a penny.
The
more knowledge you have about how successful internet
businesses are built, the faster you will have your own successful online
business. My goal is to teach you how to do this.
I
want to show you what a successful internet business *looks
like*. Once I show you this, it will help you to see
your goals clearer. You will understand what is standing in
your way, and you will be more able to understand the lessons
that follow. This will make it easier for you to succeed.
I
am not going to focus on "how to's" in this lesson,
but I will in later lessons. Right now I just want you to understand what
elements must exist for you to have a successful online business.
First you must learn the "what is it", then the "how
to do it" will come
later.
The
Two Critical Keys - Key #1 TRAFFIC!
The
key to understanding any new subject - including Internet Business, is to understand the basics
first. Then from there you can expand your knowledge to more advanced concepts.
You have to crawl before you can walk. In
internet marketing, first and foremost there are two key concepts that
*must* be understood for you to succeed. They are:
Don't
worry - I will explain what these are and how to use them.
If
you have a business, on the internet or off the internet, you are
selling a product or service to people. The more people who see
your offer, the more people who can potential buy from you and become
your customer. We use the word "traffic" to describe the
people who see your offer, that is - who visit your webpage.
NEW
TERM: TRAFFIC - This refers to the total number
of people who visit your website, or who see your offer. we
say "High Traffic" to refer to larger numbers of
people and "Low Traffic" to refer to lower numbers
of people.
However,
just having people see your offer is not enough. It is
important that you receive traffic from the right traffic
sources. Just imagine a person opening up an electronics store
at a flower shop. It probably wouldn't work too well. Why?
Because the people are there to buy flowers - not to buy
electronics. This is why it is important to reach the RIGHT
people - not just to reach people in general.
LET
ME EXPOSE A MYTH:
Many
people believe that the more people who see your offer, the
more people who will buy from you. Because of this, beginners
often get sucked into the myth that if they can drive hordes
of people to their website, that they will get sales. This is
completely false. You get sales by driving the RIGHT people to
your offer. QUALITY is much more important than QUANTITY. That
is, the quality of your traffic is much more important than
how many total people come to your website.
Now
lets talk about TRAFFIC SOURCES. We discussed that
"traffic" refers to the people who visit your
website. a "traffic source" refers to where that
traffic comes from. For example, one traffic source might be a
search engine like google or yahoo. If you have a thousand
people find your website from yahoo for example, you would say
that your traffic source was yahoo. If you wrote a newspaper
ad and thousands found your site from that newspaper ad, then
you would say that the traffic source for that traffic was the
newspaper.
NEW
TERM: TRAFFIC SOURCES - This refers to the websites
and/or ads from which people found your website.
Traffic originates from ads, and other websites - and we
call these "traffic sources"
You
can think of a traffic source much like a river. The traffic
flows from one source (such as yahoo) and continues into your
website, through your sales process, and hopefully into a
sale. Each of your traffic sources can be thought of like a
river flowing into a
lake. This "lake" of course is your website. All
your different traffic sources flow into your website.
Some
traffic sources are going to be higher quality than others.
Just as some rivers have more pure water than other rivers. You can rate different traffic sources based on the type of
people that make up that traffic source. The more interested
the people, the higher the "quality" of that traffic
source.
A
"high quality" traffic source, is one which contains
people more likely to be interested in your offer. A "low
quality" or "junk traffic" traffic source (they
mean the same thing) is
one which contains people in general, without any
consideration as to if they are interested in your offer. This
is like selling flowers at radio shack. We call this type of
traffic "untargeted". Likewise, we use the term
"targeted" for high quality traffic.
It
is extremely important to reach people in "high quality
traffic sources". I will teach you how to do this later on in
the course, but for right now I want you to understand this.
NEW
TERM: TARGET MARKET - This is a term that is used to
describe the type of person you want to become your
customer. For example, a good "target market" for selling
Clickalyzer would be internet business owners. This is the
type of people that would potentially buy our product, so we
focus our efforts on this audience.
Any
successful online business has quality traffic sources flowing
to it. This is your LIFE BLOOD. The higher quality of
this life blood, the better your business is overall.
Lets
talk about why this is so important.
POINT
1 : No one can buy from you unless they first know you
exist.
POINT
2 : No one will buy from you unless they are a member of your target market.
So
to summarize, you MUST be able to build and grow quality
traffic sources in order to succeed online. Clickalyzer was
designed to make this possible for you. I will teach you how
to do this later in the course.
The
Two Critical Keys - Key #2 CONVERSION.
We
just finished discussing traffic. Once the traffic arrives on
your website, you have successfully completed the first half
of the puzzle. Now comes the second half. Now that they are
actually on your site, hearing your offer - you want to sell
them!
What
do we mean when we say "Conversion"? We are
referring to how well we are able to sell people on our offer.
If you can get thousands of targeted visitors to your website,
but you cant convince them to buy - then you will fail.
This
is why successful internet marketers understand and analyze
their conversion rate.
NEW
TERM : CONVERSION RATE - This refers to how many
people who see your offer become a sale. It is referred to
in a percentage format such as 1% (which means one sale per
hundred visits) or 2% (two sales per hundred visits) and so
on
Why
is it so important to analyze your conversion rate? Please
hear this: Your Conversion Rate Determines the Value of
Your Traffic! In other words, the higher your conversion
rate, the higher the value of your traffic - and therefore -
the higher the value of your online business in general.
If
you are able to convert 5% of those who go to your website
into sales, then you will make FIVE TIMES AS MUCH MONEY as if
you were able to only convert 1%. This is extremely
significant, and cannot be stressed enough.
If
you have a 1% conversion rate, and turn it into a 2%
conversion rate - YOU HAVE DOUBLED YOUR MONEY.
This
is why conversion is so important. More important of course
than knowing what your conversion rate is - is knowing how to
improve it. This is part of why Clickalyzer was invented, to
make it possible for you to improve your conversion rate.
Lets
go back to conversion rate. When you analyze your conversion
rate, it is VERY important to do so for each of your TRAFFIC
SOURCES. It is not wise to just figure out your overall
conversion rate, but rather to figure out which traffic
sources are converting higher than others. This tells you
where to focus your marketing efforts to get better results.
Also,
if you base your marketing decisions on your "overall
conversion rate" then you are skewing your own
statistics. Think of many rivers of different quality all
flowing into the same lake. Which makes more sense, to analyze
each river - or to analyze the lake to determine the quality
of the water - even though some rivers have polluted it?
To
summarize, your conversion rate refers to the effectiveness of
your sales process. How good is your website or your affiliate
program website when it comes to turning visitors into
sales.
How
Conversion and Traffic Work Together.
We
already established that there are two keys for succeeding online,
traffic and conversion. Now lets talk about how they work together.
A
sale is made through the following basic typical sales process:
-
Visitor
learns of your offer from an ad
-
Visitor
visits your web site
-
Visitor
becomes a sale
Now,
"TRAFFIC" refers to how many people will go through
this process, this "funnel" if you will.
"CONVERSION" refers to how good this funnel is at
pushing people through to a sale.
If
you have high traffic, and low conversion then expect low
results. This means that you are getting many people to see
your offer, but they are just not being sold by it.
On
the other hand, if you have low traffic, and high conversion
then expect low results. This means that you have a website
that is able to sell your product quite well, but that no one
is seeing it!
This
is why it is so critical to properly test and analyze your
traffic and your conversion rate if you want to succeed. You
must be able to know clearly and definitively exactly which
traffic sources produce good traffic, and how good your sales
process is at turning that traffic into sales.
If
you do not know this critical information, then you are
gambling. You are basing your entire "business" on
"what ifs" and not on science, and reality. This is
NOT the way to do business online OR offline.
Lets
be honest. Most businesses - online and offline - fail. Why do
they fail? Because the owners of the business did not know
what was going on in the business. Its simple as that. If you
know what to expect, you can prepare for it and not fail.
Moreover,
if you know what is working and what is broken, you can fix
what is broken - and make improvements on what is already
working.
I
have never heard of a case where a business failed because
they had too much information, but I have heard of countless
cases of a business failing - especially an online business
failing because they did NOT have enough information.
No
business can improve without action. No action can be taken
unless you know what is right and what is wrong. In internet
marketing, all that is "right" and all that is
"wrong" comes down to the two things we discussed -
traffic and conversion.
This
means that if you want to improve your online business, you
must either improve your traffic - or improve your conversion.
period.
How
to Build, and Increase Quality Traffic.
The
concept of creating traffic is one I cover in the next lesson. But for
now, I want to explain the basics of how a successful marketer takes
their existing traffic, and improves on it.
A
great part of succeeding online comes down to your ability to
increase the traffic coming to your site. If you have a
hundred visitors a day coming, and you make a hundred dollars
a day from this - then it goes without saying that having two
hundred visitors, or three hundred visitors coming to your
site would cause you to earn more money.
This
is why it is so important to increase your quality traffic.
You can NEVER have too much quality traffic. The more traffic,
the more sales. This holds true of course only if the traffic
source is a good quality traffic source that reaches your
target market.
There
are many different kinds of advertising, but they all have
certain things in common.
-
They
all have a cost - be it time or money.
-
They
all reach a different group of people.
They
all present a "first impression" of your offer.
-
They
all return a value - even if that value is nothing.
-
The
more you spend, the more value is returned relative to
your spending.
The
goal of a successful advertising campaign is to receive more
than you spent. Its simple as that. If you spent a hundred
dollars on an ad, you want to be able to earn two hundred
dollars. Much of this comes back to conversion rate.
Lets
assume you have a successful advertising campaign that is
getting you a hundred visitors a day, and also a hundred
dollars a day. How can you increase this traffic? Simple -
spend more!
The
more you spend (time and/or money) on a marketing effort, the
more value comes to you from it. If the value you receive is
greater than the cost, then you need to keep doing this in
order to get more and more value.
Lets
put this in perspective. Pay per click advertising is very
common - and if you don't know what that is please research it
at google - just search for 'pay per click
advertising'
If
you have a certain keyword phrase that is generating more
revenue than it is costing you - then you should bid higher on
that keyword. This will cause more traffic to come to you and
therefore more money.
If
you have an advertisement that you ran which returned its
value or more - then you should run that advertisement again,
and again - until it no longer returns its value.
You
can see now why traffic and conversion rate are so closely
intertwined with one another. The higher your conversion rate,
the more you can afford for traffic because the higher your
conversion rate, the higher the value of the traffic you
receive.
Clickalyzer
is designed to make it easy for you to do this.
Summary
I
will show you much more in the lessons to follow. For now, I want you
to see the importance of testing and tracking as a whole. If you do
not test and track your efforts online - you cannot expect to have a
successful business, it is that simple.
Clickalyzer
is designed to make it possible and easy for you to:
-
Increase
the traffic already coming to your website
-
Analyze
and understand each of your different traffic sources
-
Understand
clearly which of your traffic sources are working and
which are a waste, and to give you information to act
appropriately.
-
Increase
your conversion rate by locating and fixing problem areas
in your sales process
-
Cut
your marketing expenses, and put more money into your
pocket.
At
this point, you have a much better idea of how a successful online
business works. the processes to succeed online are very straight
forward and simple, you are limited only by your ability to apply
these principles.
For
example, if you are running two different advertisements, and one
is generating sales and the other isn't - you should stop paying for
the ad that is not generating sales and pay more for the ad that is
getting sales. This is the formula through which success online is
achieved.
Clickalyzer
is a system that makes it easy for you to easily and accurately determine
which ads are working, and which are not. Rather than focusing only
on which ads get traffic, Clickalyzer looks at everything about your
advertisements.
You
will know every action that every visitor takes, which ad they came
from, which ads are resulting in signups, sales, subscriptions, and
so forth. You will have a clear understanding of which keywords and
search engines are generating sales, and which are generating useless
traffic.
Once
more, you will know exactly what you need to do in order to turn more
of your traffic into sales, and to easily separate the "bad traffic"
from the "good traffic."
Even
more amazing, you will be able to do this even for affiliate websites
that you do not personally own!
So,
what do you do now?
To
summarize, the successful internet marketers use
Clickalyzer to give them an extra advantage. One of the best
ways you can start reaching the levels of the “gurus”
is to use Clickalyzer in your online business.
