  • Born: baptised December 17, 1770 in Bonn, Germany but his family and later teacher Johann Albrechtsberger celebrated his birthday on December 16.
  • Died: March 26, 1827, Vienna, Austria.
  • Around 1801, he began to lose his hearing. He suffered a severe form of tinnitus.
  • He composed only one opera.
  • He is often described as a "giant straddling two styles": the Classical and the Romantic.
