California Dreaming?
Rusty Vecali

California is a famous state. It is famous for things everyone knows and for things that can surprise you. Most of us know that California is the home of movie stars and that Hollywood is located in California, but very few people know that it is one of the major cheese producers of United States! California is a progressive state, with an experimental culture. It is the state that always thinks ahead, no matter if its technology, fashion or social issues. There are many who dream about moving to California. And why not, for its the state that has an attractive past and a very promising future.

California is well know for its progressive politics and social policies. When automotive pollutants and an atmospheric inversion conspired to create a huge air pollution problem over Los Angeles, the populace responded with a regulations that severely limited the amount of emissions permitted from each automobile. The measure was effective and now air in Los Angeles is much cleaner. These types of actions have given California the distinction of having its clean air and automotive emission standards used as the benchmark for the rest of the United States. Trend setting has always been one of the notable points of California's culture.

Needless to say, the most characteristic part of California is its Film industry. Not only is it the home to Hollywood, it is the home of many movie and music stars as well. The road, Pacific Cost Highway or Route 101, twists and spreads in various direction with no regular patterns. On these betraying curves and mountains many hot chase movie scenes have been conceived. Major A-list movie stars have their homes on the mountain of Malibu. But these homes are the first victims of seasonal wild fires too!

Another attraction is California's unusual geography. Much of the state is desert, with even Los Angeles containing within its boundaries an amazing proportion of the Californian desert. To make Los Angeles a more suitable place to live in, huge amounts of water are piped in through large aqueducts from the neighboring states such as Oregon and Washington. The terrain of California is made of "scarp" which has resulted from tectonic plate movements. Part of California is placed on the north moving plate with large part of the Pacific Ocean on it. The rest is placed on the continental United State plates.

Despite popular myth, neither Los Angeles nor California is going to break off and fall into the ocean. However, these two plates are moving in different directions and the resultant pressures create the huge earthquakes for which California is known. While we're not in danger of losing Los Angeles any time soon, there will come a time when it is located roughly where Juneau Alaska is currently situated. But that won't happen for billions of years, so in the meantime we can all still enjoy the lovely Southern California weather and all the skiing, sun tanning, shopping, amusement parks and more that this great state has to offer.
