Travis Frontera For many years college students have made a tradition of taking off for warmer climates during spring break. Mexico is a favored destination for students in the Southwest. Tijuana, Mexico is just over the border from San Diego, California, and a relatively short road trip making this an ideal trip. For college students living in southern California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, the trip to Mexico is a road trip. After one or two long days of driving, students find themselves eagerly crossing the Mexican border and entering this destination hot spot. Tijuana offers low-priced food and drinks, and a great party atmosphere, during spring break. For the spring break crowd this is a haven, soaking up the sun and sleeping on the beach. The one disadvantage to taking spring break in Mexico is the high crime rate; students could find themselves in harm's way if they are not careful. Overall, many students find this an ideal location and the party doesn't end until they head back north to colder climates. But, as fun as Mexico may be, the road trip itself is an integral part of the vacation. There is something indescribably "college" about a sitting in a car for hours and eating bad travel food. Depending on the route taken, there are many places to stop and see. For some, the road to Tijuana lies partly on Route 66. For others, it takes them through Las Vegas. Some find themselves stopping by Disneyland. In spite of the place of origin, these students drive through some incredible places to get to, and from, Mexico. All this collectively, is what makes spring break so much pleasure.
