Mary Cassentar Drawn to its rolling hills, mysterious lochs and wind-beaten moors, travelers staying at a Scotland's castle hotel get a first hand look into the country's heroic past. Scotland's castles serve as a testament to a country whose history is filled with legendary romance and marred by bloody conflicts with its neighbors. A small regional selection of 5 of the cream of Scotland's castle hotels is offered below. These five are just a hint of what Scotland has to offer as far as castle hotels go. All the castles that offer accommodation will reward the visitor with fine board and privileged glimpses into the incomparable history of Scotland. Near Glasgow:
Culzean Castle The neoclassical mansion and surrounding gardens were designed and built by Robert Adams in 1777. When the Kennedy family donated the castle to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945, they requested that the top floor of the castle be given to General Eisenhower as a thank you from the people of Scotland. Ike stayed at the Culzean many times and it is still visited by members of his family today. Located 50 miles from Glasgow, Culzean is located on 560 acres of Ayrshire woodlands near some of Scotland's finest golf facilities (Turnberry, Troon, Prestwick and Western Gailes).

http://www.culzeancastle.net Within striking distance of Edinburgh: Borthwick Castle is a mere twelve miles outside Edinburgh. The ill fated honeymoon of Mary Queen of Scots and husband number 3, the Earl of Bothwell took place at 15th Century Borthwick. Whilst they were lodged in the castle the couple found that Mary's enemies had surrounded the castle. Queen Mary managed to get away by dressing up as a man. She was eventually caught however and sent to prison. There she remained for twenty one years and was released only in order to be executed at the command of Elizabeth the first of England. Bothwell, Mary's husband was caught also, and legend has it that he lost his mind and finally died in prison in Denmark. Borthwick Castle hotel began taking guest half a century before Columbus set out to discover America! Lodging is in highly comfy bedchamber, and the hotel meals are taken in the Great Hall, lit by candles. Traquair Castle Here too there is a Mary, Queen of Scots connection. In the castle's Kings Room she tended her baby Jacob who would go on to become jointly King James I of England and King James VI of Scotland. The castle hotel has returned it's three thousand book library to its original grand state.
Inside the castle we find a under-stair hiding hole which
was used first to aid the fleeing Catholic clergy and then
to help the refugees from the Jacobite rebellions. The
hotel has it's own still working brew house and boasts many
historically significant items of silver, paintings,
manuscripts and embroideries
